This method is easy and quick to perform. A normal refevence range fonthe procedure is nequired for clinical practice. The purpose of the study was to set up a normal reference range of solid phase esophageal transit function for Chinese. Methods: Twenty-eight normal healthy volunteers were enrolled for solid phase radionuclide esophageal transit study. Each subject was placed in a supine position above a gamma camera interfaced with a computer and was given a piece of scrambled egg containing 1 mCi of Tc-phytate. A computer routine modified from Klein and Wald was used in this study. Total mean transit time, regional mean transit time, residual fraction after first swallow and retrograde index were calculated. Results: The total mean transit time was 25.12 ± 6.19 sec. Mean transit time for the individual areas were: proximal, 14.68 ± 4.68 sec; middle, 16.87 ± 6.35 sec; and the distal, 16.11 ± 6.22 sec. Residual fraction and retrograde index were 0.21± 0.15% and 0.38 ± 0.15%, respectively. Conclusion: The method of radionuclide esophageal transit study is a simple, physiologic and quantitative method for evaluating esophageal motility. The normal reference range of esophageal transit will be very useful for gastroenterologist in management of dysphagia.

Esophageal contractions, bolus transit and perception of transit after swallows of liquid and solid boluses in normal subjects.
CONTEXT Esophageal dysphagia is the sensation that the ingested material has a slow transit or blockage in its normal passage to the stomach. It is not always associated with motility or transit alterations. OBJECTIVES To evaluate in normal volunteers the possibility of perception of bolus transit through the esophagus after swallows of liquid and solid boluses, the differences in esophageal ...

متن کاملRadionuclide Esophageal Transit Scintigraphy in Primary Hypothyroidism
Background/Aims Esophageal dysmotility is associated with gastrointestinal dysmotility in various systemic and neuroregulatory disorders. Hypothyroidism has been reported to be associated with impaired motor function in esophagus due to accumulation of glycosaminoglycan hyaluronic acid in its soft tissues, leading to changes in various contraction and relaxation parameters of esophagus, particu...

A better understanding of scintigraphic findings may lead to a wider acceptance of esophageal transit studies. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to correlate standard manometric parameters with the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of liquid and semi-solid bolus transport. Twenty-nine patients were simultaneously investigated with esophageal scintigraphy and manometry. Single...
متن کاملAn Evidence of Esophageal Decompensation in Patients With Achalasia in the View of Its Subtype: A Retrospective Study
BACKGROUND/AIMS Achalasia is a primary motility disorder of esophagus. Many parameters represent esophageal function and morphologic changes, but their interrelationship is not yet established. We hypothesized that esophageal body would need to generate unusual pressure to empty the food bolus through the non-relaxing lower esophageal sphincter in patients with achalasia; therefore, higher is t...
